Belfast and The Giants Causeway

I just got back from Belfast with some of my friends that go to University College Dublin. It was a great trip. Belfast is very different from Dublin, it is a victorian city so the architecture and lay out of the city is very different from the Georgian style of Dublin. It is a small compact city and was really easy to get around. We did a walking tour which was very interesting, its hard to believe that not long ago there was a lot of fighting going on there. It is also where the Titanic was built and there is an interesting memorial for the people from Belfast who never made it home. It was good weather all weekend, a bit colder than dublin, but no rain!!! The Giants cause way (pictured) was an amazing site to see. The old celtic myth goes that there was a Giant, Finn MacCool living here but his love lived in Scotland to the north east, so Finn used these rocks to build a way to reach her.  Geologically the rocks formed after the ice age. As the continents were splitting in Pangea volcanos were erupting causing a lava over flow. When the Lava was slowly cooled by the climate change of the ice age the rocks were able to form in perfect hexagonal shapes. It is pretty wild looking! We did a cliff walk that took us above the coast and we saw some amazing views. I could even see Donegal, were I was a month ago, which put into perspective how small this island really is. It is a beautiful countryside, like most of Ireland, and Nor Iron, as they call it, was definitely a cool place to visit. We took a train there and back along the coast which was spectacular, and when we got off, it felt like we were in a totally new place, different from anywhere else in Ireland.

London

This past weekend I went to London to visit some friends that are studying there. I went to the Tate, I saw the Globe Theatre, and I went to the natural history museum. I also did the London Eye Which is the largest ferris wheel in the world and I was able to see the whole city!  I also went to Nottinghill to the Portebello market which was my favorite part of the trip. It is these antique market that they have every saturday and it is nearly 4 blocks of venders! I really like London, it is a huge city and there is so much to do there!

County Donegal

One of my friends from Santa Clara has a cottage in the North West Coast of Ireland, she invited about 8 of her friends to stay there for the long weekend. The house is in Co. Donegal. It was a beautiful ride to her cottage. It took about four hours to get there and although it was a cold and raining weekend it was amazing to see this part of the country. This picture is taken on the way to the horns head cliff. It was really windy but absolutely beautiful. We were in the small town of Dunfaneghey and it was a very relaxing weekend!

FIRENZE

One weekend, I took a trip to Florence to visit my friends that are studying there. It is a beautiful city. I loved how the streets are so skinny and how everyone hangs there laundry out the window. I ate great food, seriously amazing food and I also took a day to go to Siena, which was about an hour bus ride. Siena was also a very cool city. I saw the Duomo in both Firenze and Siena and I also went to most of the famous museums in Florence. I saw the statue of David at the Art de Academia and I spent a ton of time in the Uffize, which was amazing. On my last day, I went early to Pisa because thats where my flight left from, and I saw the leaning tower which was really cool! I loved Florence and hope I can do more traveling in Italy in the coming months!

Powers Court Estate

One day we took a day trip to the Powers Court Estate, It was beautiful and there were tons of Gardens that were absolutely spectacular. We got a sunny day... so it made it all the more enjoyable. We also took a bus tour to the Wicklow mountains and saw the Wicklow gap which is a beautiful Valley in these mountains. We also went to a monastic site, Glendoulogh, which was very cool, and gave us a good history of Irish and celtic tradition.

Home-stay in County Gorey

My home-stay was about an hour south of Dublin. This picture is taken in Courtstown, which is a popular vacation spot for Dubliners and tourist. It was cold, but definitely a treat to see the Irish sea! I stayed with a family that had 3 little boys all under the age of six. One day after doing some sightseeing, I came home to find my suitcase totally unpacked, underwear and makeup everywhere! It was hilarious, and the middle boy, David, had a streak of eye liner down his forehead for the whole weekend! haha he was the culprit!

Whiskey Taste tests

I am officially a qualified whiskey taste tester!!! I was chosen to be a whiskey taste tester at my tour of the Jameson Distillery in Dublin. Jameson definitely has the upper hand when it comes to taste compared to Johnny Walker and Jack Daniel's. My new favorite drinks to get on a night out on the town are Jameson and Lemonade or Jameson and Ginger-ale... absolutely delicious!

Trinity College Dublin

This is front square at Trinity College. The buildings are so beautiful, basically the polar opposite of Santa Clara's adobe style. According to the undergrads here, it is really really bad luck if you walk under the Bell Tower (the center structure in the photo) more then once, or if you get caught under there when the bell rings... basically you are doomed to fail your exams. I have class in the museum building, which is unreal, and many of my classrooms look like 18 century living rooms with high ceilings, chandeliers, and huge windows. It is a very different academic system compared to the one on one attention at Santa Clara, but it give students the opportunity to really learn on there own.... or not learn at all...

Paris France

Paris was my first trip in Europe. I saw many of the famous places like the arc de triumph, the louvre, the eiffel tour, the pompidou and many others. It was an amazing first trip in europe and a beautiful city. I spent a lot of time with my friends that are studying there and it was nice to have some people to show me around. We ate great cheese and drank great (cheap) wine!

My Home

This is the neighborhood I live in. I am in Dublin 4 right off of Baggot St. This street is a mile long of famous pubs, a lot of them that have been here since the 18oo's. "The Baggot St. Mile" is the famous pub crawl that goes from the first pub at the bottom of my block to the last one in city center... 21 pubs... a guinness at each one, is sure to send you home early and leave you feeling a little groggy the next morning. My flat is right around the corner from this pub, The Wellington and everyday I walk past all these pubs to get to Trinity which is right in City Center. I have about a 20 minute walk to school, and when its raining, it feels a lot longer, and can be deadly cold!

Traveling the Globe

When I was in elementary school, we used to walk over to the globe in the corner of the classroom, spin it as fast as we could, close our eyes, and trace our fingers along the world as it spun. When it would stop spinning, our fingers had landed on a place and that we believed we were destined to be. I don't remember any of the places my finger stopped on so long ago, but now, traveling from South America, to Hawaii, to California, Colorado, Boston, New York, and now Europe, this is how my life feels. I spin around and choose a place on the map. So for now, I am one little point on the map, with so many places still to go, but my "battered suitcases are piled on the sidewalk again, I have a longer way to go. but no matter the road is life." My path seems a little arbitrary, there is a lot of back and forth, here and there, this place and that place, sometimes I don't even know where I am going until I get there, and although at times the journey is exhausting, I know in retrospect it will be all the more worthwhile. I have seen a small slice of culture from the places I have traveled, and the longer I here the easier it gets to leave and explore.
